Committee News

1. National Year of Reading Launch

John Radalj and Paul Rawlinson attended the state NYR launch at the State Library on Feb 14, along with the Hon Joan Kirner (VALBEC patron), Hon John Cain (NYR patron), Ted Baillieu and Steve Bracks, among many others. It was an event mirrored in Canberra on the same day with the Prime Minister, politicians and luminaries adding their support to the project initiatives that will promote the value of reading for both children and adults. VALBEC will integrate Reading as a theme in our professional development activities and Fine Print journal throughout 2012.

2. 2012 is the Year of Reading • March reading

Pauline O'Maley, VALBEC committee member and avid reader will be posting articles about reading each month.

Good news; from my point of view any excuse! I have just started reading a novel by Katie Ward called Girl Reading, a Christmas gift from my son, apt I reckon (he does too)! But it is also an excuse to pause and think about the ways in which we approach reading with our students. My observation is, it is easy for reading to get lost to the writing imperative.

But this year, the Year of Reading, join me in taking up VALBEC's encouragement to read, the word and the world. Freire urges us to develop a critical understanding of the act of reading. This is our opportunity to read about, think about and talk about reading; reading theory, methodology and practice. Much hangs on our efforts and we can be part of wider efforts of each education sector and public libraries to make us a reading nation.

This month's reading is by Paulo Freire 'The Importance of the Act of Reading'.

To read is to fly: it is to soar to a point of vantage which gives a view over wide terrains of history, human variety, ideas, shared experience and the fruits of many inquiries.

- A C Grayling, Financial Times (in a review of A History of Reading by Alberto Manguel)
