Tricia Bowen, teacher, writer and researcher will provide an overview of her current research, a project exploring connections between philosophy, ethical theory and the work of teaching and learning. This research aims to investigate how teachers can promote trust, empathy and practical wisdom in their classrooms, and how this might impact on student learning and success.
Forum participants will be provided with a brief overview of some of the ideas that philosophers, both ancient and contemporary, might offer us. Aristotle for example, spoke to the idea of building virtue or character, and in so doing maturing, developing and ultimately flourishing in the full realisation of our potential. More contemporary philosophers such as Nel Noddings, offer thought provoking ideas about a relational ethics, or an ethics of care, and its application in classroom contexts.
Participants will be invited to discuss how ideas generated by such thinkers resonate for them in their teaching practice. The forum might also provide opportunity to begin a conversation about the philosophical and ethical dimensions of our work, and act as a counterpoint to the current preoccupation with compliance and competency.
