Thank you to everybody who helped make the VALBEC 2016 conference a success, including organisers, presenters and participants. We had great day and wonderful feedback.
Our keynote speaker Tony Dreise, ACER research fellow and Indigenous educator, inspired us at the start of the day with ideas and case studies highlighting the importance of lifelong holistic education. His learning framework called 'Learning, Earning and Yearning' takes into account the whole learner 'being, belonging' and becoming'. He urged us to look at the Early Years Learning Framework as something that could more effectively inform adult learning. He also highlighted the value of practice and research, informing policy, not the other way round. Tony has an article in our latest Fine print edition entitled 'First people, first place'. 2016 vol: 39 #1
Our website has photos from the day. Who can you spot?
See the latest PowerPoints from presenters as well as some visual presentations.
If you have any further feedback or comments about the day please email info@valbec.org.au
Each month a VALBEC committee member selects a specific article from the Fine Print archive that illustrates good teaching practice, describes theories related to a ranges of literacies, explores a particular topic of interest or has some synergy with the present environment.
There are so many great articles and interesting discussions in the Fine Print archive that I found it difficult to choose. I went from looking at articles that dealt with learning difficulties to our conference theme multiple literacies and everything in between.
I stumbled upon this article, an interview between Rob McCormack and Michael Chalk in 2002. It stood out as Rob a long-time teacher and academic in the ALBE field, makes the statement that he has '…given up on literacy as a fundamental concept.' I was intrigued and had to know more.

We trust you are enjoying reading Edition #1 2016. The feature article by Tony Dreise resonates with the concepts and themes in his wonderful keynote address at the 2016 VALBEC conference - Joining the dots. We plan to have some of the stimulating and relevant presentations included in forthcoming editions for those who missed out on attending the conference.
Do you have images of students at work or engaged in activities that we could include in Fine Print? We are always on the lookout for images for the cover and to include throughout the Journal.
