The program for the Pre-Conference Symposium 'Action for Change: Indigenous Adult English Language, Literacy and Numeracy' has been announced with Professor Jack Beetson, Executive Director of the Literacy for Life Foundation as keynote speaker.
The conference has also annnounced there will be a conference app in lieu of a detail printed program.
2. Reading and Writing Hotline
This is the national database for course information. The 'typical' caller to the Hotline is male, between 25 and 44 years of age and from an English speaking background and has left school at Year 10 or even earlier.

3. VALBEC Conference - thank you
Thank you everyone for a great conference! This year the VALBEC conference took a closer look at Teaching & Learning: reflecting on practice.

Feature articles will include one by John Benseman, Director of Critical Insight Research and Evaluation in New Zealand.
John gave the keynote address 'Teaching and Research: bridging the abyss for effective practice' at the recent VALBEC Conference. See John's conference presentation.
5. Resources
Resource Gems - Learning Tutorials: GCF Learn Free
The internet now allows for a myriad of teaching and learning resources to be shared between LLN practitioners. The wealth of information available to practitioners means that finding quality resources can take time and effort. This year, VALBEC committee members will identify some 'gems' amongst the resources freely available online. Each month, a committee member will share a quality teaching resource to support your classroom teaching and professional practice. These resources may take the form of a blog, an educational podcast, a downloadable teaching resource or a Youtube channel. As always, we are interested to hear what you think. GCF Learn Free have been around for a while and are well known for their free and very accessible learning tutorials on Technology and Microsoft Office. However they also offer a range of self-paced tutorials in maths, work skills, reading and basic life skills. The one downside is that it is American so some spelling, currency and information will not be the same for Australian learners.
The information is still great however, and this this year GFC have launched a new tutorial page called 'The Now'. This page is to help people learn more about what they have seen online, i.e. augmented reality, drones, self-driving cars, click bait, trolling, fake news, etc. If you are not already familiar with GFC it is well worth the look.
Legal Aid Free teaching resources
Thank you, Angela and Victoria Legal Aid for your wonderful raffle donation at our conference. Those of you who were not there, Vic Legal Aid have updated and added to their free online 'What's the Law?' teaching resources. An additional four topics include employment, discrimination, fines and consumer issues. Fantastic resources, check it out here!
6. Learn Local Awards
Nominations close June 9th
Last year Marj Sjostrom from Keysborough Learning Centre was recognised as Outstanding Practitioner, for her work in digital literacy, family literacy programs with primary schools and work skills programs for people facing barriers to employment.
Take the opportunity to reward a LLN practitioner in your Learn Local that deserves recognition for their great work.
7. Funding Grants for Women's Leadership Development urgent
Women and Leadership Australia (WLA) is administering a national initiative to support the development of female leaders across Australia's education sector.
The initiative is providing women with grants of between $3,000 and $8,000 to enable participation in a range of leadership development programs.
The leadership development programs are part-time and delivered nationally via WLA's blended learning model. Scholarship funding is strictly limited and has to be allocated prior to the end of this financial year (June 30).
