1. VALBEC 2019 Conference - Call for Presentations

Call for Presentations

Our theme for 2019 invites us to celebrate and explore how teachers and students achieve in education. Let's explore how we:

Connect - with colleagues, community and students to succeed in a new skill, or lay down the foundations for something new

Educate - by the development and delivery of good learning experiences for students or staff.

Empower - demonstrate how learning has enabled students or colleagues to utilise their resilience to achieve their goals

This is a fabulous moment to bring a work in progress to get feedback or to trial materials.

Proposals to be submitted by 25th March 2019. Presenters will be notifed by 10th April 2019 of their inclusion in the Conference program.

3. Practical Matters in Fine Print

While you wait for your next issue of Fine Print to arrive (it's about two months away) why not reread the Practical Matters articles in the 2018 issues to get some inspiration. In Vol. 41 #1, Lee Kindler and Jan Hagston shared tips for improving students' spelling and Marc Brierty offered 'Show me the money', a unit he developed around Australian banknotes. In Vol. 41 #2, Kerrie Tomkins explained how the Leopold Community and Learning Centre introduced a 'Technology Tearoom' in response to a growing need in the community and Manalini Kane taught us card games that boost learners' numeracy skills. In Vol. 41 #3, Felix Chapple showed us how grouping students into 'production companies' with each company required to produce a film for a gala film event at the end of the unit is a great way to turn a 'process' themed course into an engaging project-based learning experience.

If you have found a creative solution to a teaching problem, why not share it with your colleagues through Fine Print. Email fineprint@valbec.org.au to discuss your idea.

4. From Bedtime Math to National Pi Day

March 14th (3.14 in the month/day format)

I have been receiving the daily emails from Bedtime Math containing wacky nightly math problems for about a year now. They are full of entertaining snippets of information and the maths that emanates from them. Recently I have read about, and done the maths on, the tallest Lego tower, a tortoise lost for 30 years, kids reading books to cats and making your own geodes (rock crystals) out of eggs.

Bedtime Maths

This last post took me to the Steve Spangler Science website, where I also found interesting hands-on activities to prove the constant Pi, (π).

Experiments with Pi

… And then to National Pi Day. So, on March 14 this year why not celebrate National Pi Day with your class by doing some numeracy activities on circles and Pi.

Manifesto for Adult Learning in the 21st Century: The Power and Joy of Learning

The updated EAEA manifesto 2019 outlines the challenges where adult education can play a key role, it's transformative possibilities and the power and joy of learning.

The manifesto is targeted at European, national and regional policy makers to demonstrate the benefits of adult learning. In the upcoming European elections, the manifesto will help communicate EAEA's vision of a Learning Europe with all necessary skills, knowledge and competences.

EAEA proposes a Europe-wide effort to go one step up, to develop a knowledge society that can deal with the challenges of our time. This demands sustainable investments now – on the European, national, regional and local levels in adult education.
